joss-whedon1-211x300

I’m a pretty big Joss Whedon fan. I loved Buffy, was a huge fan of Firefly and now I enjoy Dollhouse when I get a break. I also like this quote by him about passion. Enjoy!

“Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping… waiting… and though unwanted… unbidden… it will stir… open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us… guides us… passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we’d know some kind of peace… but we would be hollow… Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we’d be truly dead.” -Joss Whedon

Asthma Kills… don’t be fooled…

asthma diagram

Asthma is a killer…. we seldom think of it or worry about the breaths we take until we are gasping for them.  I personally have moderate to severe asthma and it can sneak up on you throughout a day or month or year.  Asthma is no laughing matter and it’s definitely not one of those things you should let go.

It’s something I have lived with my entire life and something I usually don’t tell anyone.  WHY??

1- I don’t like to show weakness
2 – I don’t want sympathy
3- I was always told to never discuss your health unless it was good
4- People really don’t care
5- I don’t want to be a burden to anyone
6- It’s no one’s business anyway
7- It can be embarrassing at times

I am hoping this post will help others get treated before they are gasping for air and can’t breathe.  I had an ER visit myself today… and I just don’t like the way asthma is portrayed and perceived in the medical field or the general public.  It’s nothing to be ashamed of and it’s not worth dying over.  Get the help you need as soon as possible.  I have posted segments from other articles and stats from the AAFA.  Take a look and maybe this will help you or someone else you know.  – HC -   ASTHMA STATS from the aafa

ARTICLE from the NY TIMES:

In the end, it took Mike Ivey, 20, only a few minutes to die. Though he’d had asthma since the age of 11, Ivey was an energetic, active young man. He attended Catholic University in Washington on an academic scholarship and played varsity football while also holding down a full-time job and helping raise his 2-year-old daughter.

But when he was rushed to the emergency room last fall, gasping for air like a man drowning, Ivey was already doomed. Two weeks earlier, he had begun using his inhaler more frequently to open up his bronchial airways and breathe more easily. Apparently he didn’t realize that his increasing need for the inhaler meant something deadly was happening to his lungs.

His cousin brought Ivey into Providence Hospital in Washington at 8:24 P.M. on Friday, Sept. 18. At 8:40, Ivey went into respiratory arrest; 10 minutes later, his heart stopped beating. By 9:50, after all attempts to revive him had failed, the young scholar, athlete, husband and father was declared dead of asthma.

“Seeing those lungs at autopsy, I don’t know how he was even breathing,” says Dr. Margaret Barron, chairman of emergency medicine at Providence. “Kids like him, who are young and in good physical shape — strong heart, no coronary artery disease — don’t need that much oxygen to keep going. So they manage to just get by — until the bottom falls out.”

THIS IS A SCENE THAT SHOULD HAVE disappeared with an earlier generation. Yet young people are still suffocating because of an entirely treatable disease. Throughout the 1980′s, while deaths from childhood illnesses were declining for just about every other disease (besides AIDS), deaths from childhood asthma were on the rise.
(from the article in the New York Times: Asthma Kills by Robin Marantz Henig)

AsthmaAttack!GufPahtDoctors, the public and patients alike do NOT take this disease seriously enough.  Most of the time it’s treated in the general public as well as the medical industry as a hayfever type situation.  Its more serious than that and it’s a very common disease. – HC

FROM THE CORONERS OFFICE:

Nearly 5000 people die each year in this country from asthma; in another group equally as big, asthma is a contributor to their death. Although most people who die from asthma are over 50 years old, over the last 20 years there has been an 80% increase in the death rate among children and teens with asthma.

Asthma is a common disease. It is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism (and work absenteeism in adults). It is also a frequent cause of ER visits. The disease can be exacerbated by certain activities (e.g. sports participation), certain conditions (e.g. cold air), but it can strike anytime and can strike without apparent trigger.

Asthma is characterized by bronchiolar constriction/spasm and mucous thickening and plugging (with blocking of bronchioles). The latter condition is the most lethal and the most difficult to treat.

How do we prevent these deaths? This is a bit tougher than some of the other causes, but individuals need to have access to medical care and be assured (ensured) that they are receiving optimal care based on the most up-to-date treatment guidelines. People need to also be aware just how deadly this disease can be. We won’t prevent them all, but some deaths will then be prevented. All people must have access to quality medical care, or we must accept the consequences (people will die). (Full article form the Coroners Office)

Don’t quit before you reach your true potential

I love this video. I think it’s from the movie facing the giants. It teaches us a great point though. A lot of people quit before they reach their potential. How many times in our lives have we thought that we couldn’t do something only to find out we could? You see, your limitations define you. They make up who you are and your level of success. Imagine for a moment that you had no preconceived notions that you couldn’t do something. What new experiences, challenges and goals could you accomplish? It’s like the video when they blindfold the football player. He thought he could only make it to half of the field. Instead while blind folded, he made it across the entire field. If he had not had the blindfold on, he might have only made it to his pre-conceived limitation.

If you didn’t know what your limitations were, how much further could you go?

Dropbox-Review-2-300x300

Here is a cool resource I found the other day: Dropbox. QUICK NOTE: For all you folks that wonder, NO I am not being paid or given any incentive whatsoever by them. I just think it’s a cool tool that you might find useful to use. It’s also free for the basic package of up to 2 gigs!

Copied from their website:

Let’s say you’re editing a document at home. As soon as you click ‘Save’, Dropbox will sync this same file to all your other computers (and now your iPhone!) instantly and automatically. It’s as if you saved the document to all of your computers. This gives you the freedom to work on any of your computers and always have the files you need updated.

Now when I make changes to my documents, it saves the most updated version on all of my computers. No longer do I have to wonder if this document has the up to the minute updates. Pretty cool stuff. Check it out at www.getdropbox.com. Enjoy!

A Case of the Mondays?

office-space-300x222

This morning I was checking messages on Facebook and Twitter and couldn’t help but notice the massive amount of negative posts about it being Monday today. Statuses such as: “I wish it was Friday already, bad sign.” or “Dear Monday, get better.” or even, “F**k Monday.”

What is the big deal about it being Monday? It’s the same as any other day. There is no evil force causing you to have a bad day. There is no black cloud that follows you around. I understand most folks have to go back to work after having the weekend off, but still. You get to choose how your Monday will be. It can be an incredible day or it can be a crappy one. Your choice. You get to determine how you respond to it being Monday. You can have a terrible no good very bad day if you want too, but it gets you nowhere (remember that book? Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day? Ha ha, I used to read it when I was little).

Personally, I love Mondays. It’s the start of a brand new week! It’s the first day of the rest of my life. I love it because every Sunday night I will look back at the past week and see what I can do to better myself, my business and my life next week. Monday is the very first day of it. The first day to make changes, refocus and rededicate myself to my goals and the week ahead. I wake up Monday morning excited to take on the day.

Lose the case of the Mondays. It does absolutely nothing for you to be angry or complain about the day. Instead refocus yourself towards your accomplishments. Dedicate yourself to your purpose and charge at the week headfirst. What are you going to make happen this week?

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.- Mark Twain

Such a valuable lesson. Why lead a life of mediocrity? Why stay stagnant? What is that point of playing it safe and never seeking the great opportunities our world has out there for those willing to find it? If you live a life never seeking your potential what is the point? Why live life like an invalid? Explore, create and build. Find your adventure. Go Big And Live Large.

spartan_cheerleaders_snl4-300x254

Dream killers and stealers really tick me off. What is it that gives them the right to shatter another’s dream? The bad thing is that the world is full of these dream killers. Parents, friends, teachers and coworkers do it all the time to people whether they realize it or not. In my opinion those who say it can’t be done, shouldn’t attempt to crush the people trying to do it.

The sad truth is that not everyone will get behind your dreams. I will never forget the day that I spoke to a career counselor about one of the first business ideas I had as a sophomore in college. I had the idea to build a career search website with videos from top experts in every field. Picture Monster meets thousands of mini instructional documentaries and materials on how to get jobs. Basically you could search for any job, and get advice on what the job was like from qualified experts in video format. You could learn what their personal experiences were, how to climb up the ladder, what to do what not to do, the real stories of what it was really like, strategies for getting the job and much more. Pretty cool idea… eh?

I asked her advice about how to accomplish my dream. She quickly gave me hundreds of reasons why I couldn’t do it. There was too much competition from other companies, It wasn’t a good idea and people wouldn’t buy into it, I wasn’t “qualified,” I didn’t know anything about business, my major was wrong, who was going to fund a crazy idea like that…. yada, yada, yada… she killed my dream. As I was getting up to leave, this career woman asked me: “Why do you want to start a business in the first place? You are too young to be an entrepreneur. Why don’t you go work for someone else for a few years and then THINK about starting something on your own.” I left her office beaten. Sadly, I gave up that dream and never pursued it further. Guess what Monster just launched not too long ago? Career Snapshot. Basically a stripped down version of a similar concept. Hmm… Not such a bad idea after all was it career lady???

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” – Winston Churchill

Something I always say, “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something – especially friends, family, and strangers. The only person that has to buy into you… is YOU. YOU HAVE TO BECOME YOUR OWN CHEERLEADER! If you buy into what others say you may wind up with what they have.” Do you really want that? Follow your dreams and don’t listen to these dream killers who rarely know what they are talking about in the first place.

Money from Nielsen TV Ratings?? wow

nielsen

Here is a picture I snapped of a direct mail kit from Nielsen TV ratings I got in the mail the other day. It had a few cool strategies I want to point out to help you in your direct mail campaigns. The most obvious are the two crisp dollars. This forces the reader to have a connection with the mail piece. The first connection is curiosity. They will ask why did they send me $2? This leads the reader to look at your direct mail more carefully. Most people check their mail over the trash can. You have an extremely short time to grab them by the throat and make them take a few more seconds to read your mail piece. Money can grab just about anyone’s attention. Now you don’t have to use money, you could use a number of things. The point is to be outrageous, different and attention grabbing. There is a really cool book on this by Bill Glazer, you can check it out here. The $2 also created another emotion: obligation. Unless you are greedy and heartless, most people are going to want to give something back in return for a gift, even if its just their attention. The $2 works well here. People are going to feel obligated to fill out the survey and return it. After all Nielsen sent $2 in advance for it (brave souls)!

The second strategy I want to point out is ease of response. The survey was short and had three ways to respond. You could either log in to their website, fill out the included paper survey (with envelope and stamp included), or call on the phone. If your marketing materials are not easy to respond to, they WILL NOT work. It’s like a billboard with nothing but a hard to remember phone number. Worthless.

I would have changed a few things about this mailing. I probably would have changed up the envelope to be a standard first class one instead of a branded one with Nielsen all over it. And most likely done some work with headlines and testimonials. Nonetheless, a great mail piece. A tip of the hat to you Nielsen! I’m curious to see your results!
