I absolutely love this video. It’s an ad from Apple way back in 1997. I thought that it basically summed up my readers better than anything else. I just appeared with 2 clients / friends on the new Cookalong Live Show with famous Chef, Gordon Ramsey.  He is eccentric, different and knows his stuff.  He is a showman and is now teaching people how to cook from home – LIVE – on Fox.  Some people think he is crazy…. I applaud him.  Read more below…

Here is the text version:

Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits.
The rebels.
The troublemakers.einstein-tongue-out-150x150
The round pegs in the square holes.
The ones who see things differently.
They’re not fond of rules.
And they have no respect for the status quo.
You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.
About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them.
Because they change things.
They push the human race forward.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones,
We see genius.
Because the people who are crazy enough to think
they can change the world,
Are the ones who do.

So here is a toast to you, readers. You are the imaginative, the creative, the mentally and physically strong, the innovators, the revolutionaries and the creators that push our world forward. Keep on following your hearts and passions. Keep on in your pursuit to build something incredible to give to the world. Show the world who you are and what you are made of.

Put a bullet through the forehead of mediocrity.

Yesterday the world lost a great mentor Jim Rohn to Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Although I never met him, Jim has greatly impacted my life over the past few years with his teachings. He challenged me to be my best and inspired me to live my dreams. Jim, you are legendary to me and you will be missed. In honor, here are a few of my favorite quotes from Jim Rohn: rohn_photo

Resolve says, “I will.” The man says, “I will climb this mountain. They told me it is too high, too far, too steep, too rocky and too difficult. But it’s my mountain. I will climb it. You will soon see me waving from the top or dead on the side from trying.”

Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time.

If you learn to set a good sail, the wind that blows will always take you to the dreams you want, the income you want, and the treasures of mind, purse, and soul you want.

I used to say, “Things cost too much.” Then my teacher straightened me out on that by saying, “The problem isn’t that things cost too much. The problem is that you can’t afford it.” That’s when I finally understood that the problem wasn’t “it” – the problem was “me.”

If you don’t like how things are, change it! You’re not a tree. You must get good at one of two things: sowing in the spring or begging in the fall. The soil says, “Don’t bring me your need, bring me your seed.”

Walk away from the 97% crowd. Don’t use their excuses. Take charge of your own life. You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.

Your paycheck is not your employer’s responsibility, it’s your responsibility. Your employer has no control over your value, but you do.

If you wish to find, you must search. Rarely does a good idea interrupt you.

I find it fascinating that most people plan their vacations with better care than they plan their lives. Perhaps that is because escape is easier than change. If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they may have planned for you? Not much.

It’s lonely at the top.

odd birdI have noticed something very common among my entrepreneur friends: we often feel like the odd man out (Or odd women out, for our lady readers).

Entrepreneurs often have a hard time hanging with their old friends and they feel like they are out of place. We are different. We see the world through a completely different set of lenses than most people. We have different experiences, problems and struggles. We are constantly thinking about different things on top of what others think about. We don’t get to leave it behind or come back next Monday like most people. The books we read and television we watch, to the daily activities we partake in and our lifestyles have all completely changed so dramatically that common ground has been lost. You can’t talk about the things that are the most important to you such as your daily struggles with customers, your victories and experiences. It’s not that you feel superior to your old friends or anything, or that what your friends have to say isn’t valid, it’s just that you have become this new person inside. It’s hard to connect with them in this huge aspect of your life. Your lives are completely different now. This often leads to feelings of becoming the odd man out in your old circles. You have this massive side of you that you feel you can’t share with anyone you care about because they don’t understand or can’t relate to you.

I remember trying to talk about business life with my friends and family. They would just blank stare at me like I was from another planet. They were very important to me, but I felt this huge sense of isolation among them. Their lives were so completely different from my own, it was like being in a crowded room and still feeling lonely.

We entrepreneurs are the odd men out. We are different and are no longer normal to our old friends. It’s like we are from a new world. The problem there is that we have lost our common ground. Our connection has changed because of this new side of us. I have found the secret that will help us manage this: Surround yourself with like minded business owners and professionals that want you to succeed and encourage them to do so as well. Meet with them frequently. If you do this you will gain a new network of individuals that you can celebrate success with and face similar challenges together. You will also gain a vault of experienced information that you can build and profit from. You will be amazed at the differences in your conversations and how fulfilling it can be to talk with someone who is in the same boat as you are. You need that time to share your victories, experiences, trials. Please do not get me wrong here, I’m not saying that you should abandon your family or your friends at all. They are still your family and friends, only you have changed. You need this new network of like minded people to connect with your business side of life that your friends and family cannot fill.

Build a network of folks who are just like you. This way you can bridge this inner gap inside yourself and share your business side with people of like mind. You will be amazed at how refreshing it is when you don’t have to fight or convince them… it’s nice when people just “GET IT.”

russian-roulette-240x300

Are you playing Russian roulette with your business? Well, you could be if you aren’t marketing to women. Not too long ago a study found that women control 83% of purchase decisions and are the chief purchasing officer in most households. This mammoth-sized market has become a 4.7 trillion dollar machine (and that does not account for teen spending). Women are a majority, not a niche market. Another study found that women are responsible for more than 89% of bank accounts, 80% of healthcare, and 51% of all electronic purchases.

There is, however, one big problem: communication to them. A lot of marketing is aimed at a male audience and does not account for the large market of women. Women are a much tougher crowd to convince to purchase. What can you do to make your business speak her language? I have assembled a FEW concepts to help over the next few blog entries.

To begin: If you are going to market to women, you must understand the differences between the men and women and how they shop. Men buy while women shop around a bit. For example, a man and woman go to purchase a particular item. The man is going to walk in, find it and buy it within 5 minutes. Women however, are much more complicated. A woman is going to seek information first to learn the ins and outs of the product or service. In a recent study, 70% of women do research on a particular product before they purchase. Women like to find out all the nitty gritty first. They do this because they want to make informed decisions about a product or service. She, for instance, might Google a review of a restaurant or ask a salesmen a few questions. Ever notice how women will read the instructions, while men tend to just try to put it together? Similar concept. Women want the info first before acting.

The next concept is that you must understand that a woman goes through what I call a “shopping process.” She first, will find the product or service she wants. She then will think about it and then will think about it some more. She goes through a collaborative process where she will ask questions like, “what do you think about this?” or “does this look good?” Make your store a place that allows for collaboration from friends with things like couches in the dressing area. Or your business could offer “consultants” to offer free advice. Here is an example: There is a great women’s clothing store that has style consultants that show women how to dress for their body shape, skin tone and much more. They establish a connection with her and reassure the woman that they look good in that dress they tried on. Imagine the difference in a place like that over shopping at Wal-mart. Also, make comparison-shopping easy. Show her that she is making the smartest decision with testimonials and benefits of purchasing from you. She needs to know her purchase is the right choice. Teach your salesmen or employees objections she may have and how to respond to them properly. Women are very detail-oriented. She next has to feel good about her purchase. She will consider factors like: how will this affect me or my family? Lastly, if she feels completely satisfied, then she makes a purchase.

Don’t play Russian roulette with your business and start marketing to more women. More concepts to come soon!

Unleash your INNER Giant…

ross-giantmanDenial yourself is one of the saddest tragedies of our world today. Funny saying – Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt… hahahaha.  We are bigger and better than that…. aren’t we?  We have millions of people out there that are holding themselves back by denying their extraordinary ability to accomplish anything they want.  Unleash your INNER giant!

They deny who they are.
They deny who they could become.
They deny their future success.

Right now, there is someone somewhere holding onto a new invention, a new symphony, a new cure, a new book or a new business idea inside themselves that could revolutionize their industry. We have assistants that should be running companies. There are back up singers that should taking the front stage. However, their self doubt has held them back. They sabotage their success with internal statements like: “I couldn’t do that. I don’t have the education.” Or “I’m not good enough. There are thousands of people better than me.”

They have denied their inner giant. They have denied their ability. They have told themselves that success is for other people and not for them.

You have untold talent right before you. It’s lingering inside of you. Right within your grasp. If you continue to think small, you will remain small. You are capable of doing great things. You have talent inside of you waiting to burst out and carry yourself into greatness. I truly believe that you can do something incredible, if you dedicate yourself to your success. Stop holding yourself back. Stop limiting your own supply.

You have the talent.
You have the knowledge.
You have the ability.

SO USE IT.

Are you denying your inner giant?

You ARE who you THINK you are…

changing_expectationsOne of the world’s most untold tragic failures is the belief of limitations to our ability to accomplish something. That we are incapable of rising above our environment or circumstances. I truly believe it’s largely responsible for the poverty and many of the problems of our world today. How is it possible to rise above and accomplish something when you believe you cannot do it?

How can you do something worthwhile while you are the “victim” of circumstances or your environment? When you’re down on your luck with the world against you? How can you be a success when you think that success is for other people favored to be wealthy and not for you? Or my personal favorite….

How can you be a success while you are a professional victim?

How can you rise above while holding onto thoughts such as these? You cannot become something other than the thoughts you hold true about yourself. There is no way possible for someone to succeed while they think, live and talk as a failure. One of my favorite quotes of all time:

You are your limitations.
If it’s going to BE…. It’s up to ME.
If you think you can or you think you can’t – YOU’RE RIGHT!

So true. We create our lives by our limits. They make up who we are. Our belief in ourselves creates who we are and what we can do. Nothing can help the person who has given up hope in their ability to succeed. There is nothing sadder than the person who lays down and gives in to the notion that they cannot. All of our discoverers, inventors, revolutionaries and builders all had unshakable belief in their ability to succeed. Faith in yourself eliminates fear, doubt and uncertainty and allows you to push forward when everything tells you to pull back. It keeps you moving with the world on your back. Without faith, your limitations can cripple your achievement. If you believe you will fail most likely you will attract that very thing. You are who you think you are. If you think failure you will become one.

Don’t ever say that you can’t do something. Change your philosophy and ask yourself how can you do it.  YOU MIGHT just surprise yourself!!!

Josh Whedon – Passion

joss-whedon1-211x300

I’m a pretty big Joss Whedon fan. I loved Buffy, was a huge fan of Firefly and now I enjoy Dollhouse when I get a break. I also like this quote by him about passion. Enjoy!

“Passion, it lies in all of us, sleeping… waiting… and though unwanted… unbidden… it will stir… open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us… guides us… passion rules us all, and we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… and the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion maybe we’d know some kind of peace… but we would be hollow… Empty rooms shuttered and dank. Without passion we’d be truly dead.” -Joss Whedon

Asthma Kills… don’t be fooled…

asthma diagram

Asthma is a killer…. we seldom think of it or worry about the breaths we take until we are gasping for them.  I personally have moderate to severe asthma and it can sneak up on you throughout a day or month or year.  Asthma is no laughing matter and it’s definitely not one of those things you should let go.

It’s something I have lived with my entire life and something I usually don’t tell anyone.  WHY??

1- I don’t like to show weakness
2 – I don’t want sympathy
3- I was always told to never discuss your health unless it was good
4- People really don’t care
5- I don’t want to be a burden to anyone
6- It’s no one’s business anyway
7- It can be embarrassing at times

I am hoping this post will help others get treated before they are gasping for air and can’t breathe.  I had an ER visit myself today… and I just don’t like the way asthma is portrayed and perceived in the medical field or the general public.  It’s nothing to be ashamed of and it’s not worth dying over.  Get the help you need as soon as possible.  I have posted segments from other articles and stats from the AAFA.  Take a look and maybe this will help you or someone else you know.  – HC -   ASTHMA STATS from the aafa

ARTICLE from the NY TIMES:

In the end, it took Mike Ivey, 20, only a few minutes to die. Though he’d had asthma since the age of 11, Ivey was an energetic, active young man. He attended Catholic University in Washington on an academic scholarship and played varsity football while also holding down a full-time job and helping raise his 2-year-old daughter.

But when he was rushed to the emergency room last fall, gasping for air like a man drowning, Ivey was already doomed. Two weeks earlier, he had begun using his inhaler more frequently to open up his bronchial airways and breathe more easily. Apparently he didn’t realize that his increasing need for the inhaler meant something deadly was happening to his lungs.

His cousin brought Ivey into Providence Hospital in Washington at 8:24 P.M. on Friday, Sept. 18. At 8:40, Ivey went into respiratory arrest; 10 minutes later, his heart stopped beating. By 9:50, after all attempts to revive him had failed, the young scholar, athlete, husband and father was declared dead of asthma.

“Seeing those lungs at autopsy, I don’t know how he was even breathing,” says Dr. Margaret Barron, chairman of emergency medicine at Providence. “Kids like him, who are young and in good physical shape — strong heart, no coronary artery disease — don’t need that much oxygen to keep going. So they manage to just get by — until the bottom falls out.”

THIS IS A SCENE THAT SHOULD HAVE disappeared with an earlier generation. Yet young people are still suffocating because of an entirely treatable disease. Throughout the 1980′s, while deaths from childhood illnesses were declining for just about every other disease (besides AIDS), deaths from childhood asthma were on the rise.
(from the article in the New York Times: Asthma Kills by Robin Marantz Henig)

AsthmaAttack!GufPahtDoctors, the public and patients alike do NOT take this disease seriously enough.  Most of the time it’s treated in the general public as well as the medical industry as a hayfever type situation.  Its more serious than that and it’s a very common disease. – HC

FROM THE CORONERS OFFICE:

Nearly 5000 people die each year in this country from asthma; in another group equally as big, asthma is a contributor to their death. Although most people who die from asthma are over 50 years old, over the last 20 years there has been an 80% increase in the death rate among children and teens with asthma.

Asthma is a common disease. It is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism (and work absenteeism in adults). It is also a frequent cause of ER visits. The disease can be exacerbated by certain activities (e.g. sports participation), certain conditions (e.g. cold air), but it can strike anytime and can strike without apparent trigger.

Asthma is characterized by bronchiolar constriction/spasm and mucous thickening and plugging (with blocking of bronchioles). The latter condition is the most lethal and the most difficult to treat.

How do we prevent these deaths? This is a bit tougher than some of the other causes, but individuals need to have access to medical care and be assured (ensured) that they are receiving optimal care based on the most up-to-date treatment guidelines. People need to also be aware just how deadly this disease can be. We won’t prevent them all, but some deaths will then be prevented. All people must have access to quality medical care, or we must accept the consequences (people will die). (Full article form the Coroners Office)

Don’t quit before you reach your true potential

I love this video. I think it’s from the movie facing the giants. It teaches us a great point though. A lot of people quit before they reach their potential. How many times in our lives have we thought that we couldn’t do something only to find out we could? You see, your limitations define you. They make up who you are and your level of success. Imagine for a moment that you had no preconceived notions that you couldn’t do something. What new experiences, challenges and goals could you accomplish? It’s like the video when they blindfold the football player. He thought he could only make it to half of the field. Instead while blind folded, he made it across the entire field. If he had not had the blindfold on, he might have only made it to his pre-conceived limitation.

If you didn’t know what your limitations were, how much further could you go?

Here is a cool resource I found the other day: Dropbox. QUICK NOTE: For all you folks that wonder, NO I am not being paid or given any incentive whatsoever by them. I just think it’s a cool tool that you might find useful to use. It’s also free for the basic package of up to 2 gigs!

Copied from their website:

Let’s say you’re editing a document at home. As soon as you click ‘Save’, Dropbox will sync this same file to all your other computers (and now your iPhone!) instantly and automatically. It’s as if you saved the document to all of your computers. This gives you the freedom to work on any of your computers and always have the files you need updated.

Now when I make changes to my documents, it saves the most updated version on all of my computers. No longer do I have to wonder if this document has the up to the minute updates. Pretty cool stuff. Check it out at www.getdropbox.com. Enjoy!
